Olive oil figures prominently in the history and culture of Montalcino. The picturesque, undulating slopes of the region were covered by olive groves long before vineyards were ever planted. L'Orciaia is a place where olive oil was stored in earthenware jars. Argiano L'O is the super tuscan cepage of Cabernet and Sangiovese with a fifth of Merlot, assembled from a tapestry of vineyard soils including light sands and limestone to clays and schist, lightly pebbled to hard and stony soils, all contributing bucolic complexity and textural minerality to the wine.

Brunello di Montalcino is one of the world’s great wines, crafted from the pick of Sangiovese, hand sorted for excellence, off the most stately vineyards in all Tuscany. Montalcino enjoys one of the warmest and driest mesoclimes in Tuscany, grapes ripen a week earlier than nearby Chianti Classico and achieve the most amazing intensity. Brunello spends its first year in French oak barriques, building structure and infusing complexity, followed by transfer to larger format oak to integrate the layers of palate and arrive at a place of exceptional balance.

There are only forty eight hectares of Argiano estate vineyards around the greater Montalcino region, planted to propitious southerly exposures, they enjoy magnificent growing conditions year round. Ancient seas once covered these terroirs and the soils contain large quantities of mineral, essential for the unique character and peerless quality of wines. Vintages of Brunello di Montalcino date back to the 14th century, the are distinguished by their elegance, wines of outstanding concentration, rounded, voluptuous body and refined, silky tannins.

Just south of Florence, amongst the warm dry climes of Montalcino, growers of a small dark Sangiovese clone, nicknamed Brunello, have been tending their family vines since the 14th century. The best parcels are reserved for processing by Argiano, who fashion this unique grape into one of Italy's most stately wines, the perfect combination of elegance and power. Crafted to the enduring winemaking techniques of times long past, decant for at least an hour before service.

Since 1888, Montalcino's finest Sangiovese grapes have been devoted to Brunello, one of the world's most renowned red wines. Argiano selects fruit from its noblest vineyards, to be vinified and aged in the most extravagant oak. A full year in French 225 litres barriques builds structure and integrity, followed by eighteen months in larger Slovenian oak casks to ensure the concentration of flavours are beginning to soften just as the wine is bottled.

The Fowles family have been at the centre of Victoria's commerce and development since early settlement. Founders of Bendigo Bank and Fowles Auction Group, they also established the first Victorian winery ever to win Great Australian Shiraz Challenge. Aramis craft nothing but the finest possible, crafted from the pick of fruit grown to the most splendid sites. All the winemaking is highly traditional and very labour intensive, maturation takes place in a high proportion of new American oak barriques. A deeply ruby purple Shiraz, the nose offers mulberry, blackberries and plum, toasty oak and wafts of fresh mint over layers of dark chocolate. On the palate blueberry, black raspberry and char, wonderful intensity, supple integrated fruit tannins before a long finish, all in fine balance with the soothing alcohol warmth of Gulf St Vincent.

Many of the Aramis estate vines are planted on their original rootstock into some of the world's oldest mineral rich soils, where they enjoy excellent sun exposure and the most temperate of Mediterranean climes. Heat generated during the day is moderated each evening by coastal winds that cool the vines for an extended ripening, encouraging the tannins and stimulating the juicy fruit esters to ripen slowly into full bloom. The final wine is assembled from a selection of the best barrels, those parcels which can best demonstrate an intensity of fruit, balanced by well integrated oak.

Aramis are endowed with over sixty acres of the most propitious vineyards in all McLaren Vale. There's a single elite block of old Shiraz, at the very top of the steeply planted property, invigorated by the balmy maritime breezes of Gulf St Vincent, it yields a spectacular harvest of fruit, defined by its fragrantly spiced cassis opulence, chamois, mocha tannins and textural mineral richness. The Heir is assembled from the best of the best barrels Aramis Shiraz, matured two years in a luxuriously high proportion of new French oak hogsheads, unfiltered and unfined.

The Aramis vineyards are blessed by a close proximity to the southern coast, where daily sea breezes combine with the exacting vineyard management regimens, to deliver small but high quality harvests of intensely flavoured fruit. Berries are always quite small in size, displaying an enhancement of pure varietal characters and splendid concentration of flavour. Redolent of dark barmble fruit characters and fragrant violet cassis bouquets, a selection of the finest oak barrels are employed to mellow and integrate the succulent McLaren Vale Cabernet tannins.

Ray and Patrik Jones first venture into wine culture was a proposal for a film featuring industry savant James Halliday as anchorman. Set near the juncture of Kangarilla and Tatachilla Roads at McLaren Vale, the father and son operation release small amounts of hand made wine. Arakoon are somewhat more elegant and understated, a stylistic objective achieved through extended post ferment maceration and supple new French oak. Sellicks Beach conjures violet and spiced plums over a heady touch of bourbon barrel and creamy, mocha tannins.

One of the oldest winemaking firms in the world, Antinori first commenced production at Tuscany and Florence circa 1385. The majority of Antinori vineyards are located in Chianti Classico. With the passage of the 1984 DOCG laws, Chianti Classico grapes became so complex and rich, that they needed more ageing than the fresh and fruit driven Santa Cristina could bear, to maintain its character and style. Santa Cristina moved away from the Chianti Classico designation, by including components of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah to the firmness of Sangiovese.

Tignanello are at the heart of Chianti Classico, in the gently rolling hillsides between the Greve and Pesa river valleys. Vines are planted to rich marine limestone and schist soils, laid down during the Pliocene period. Tignanello is one of the most illustrious wines in the world, a milestone in the long history of viticulture. Crafted from parcels of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Tignanello is treated to maturation in a selection of the finest French oak barriques, followed by a rigorous cull to assemble the final wine.

Antinori's Tenuta Tignanello is situated between the Greve and Pesa valleys, between the little villages of Monteridolfi and Santa Maria a Macerata, thirty kilometres south of Florence. The elite Tignanello site grows Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc. An ancient villa on the property dates back to 1346. In the seventeenth century it was owned by a branch of the Medici family, who named it Fonte dei Medici. Acquired by the Antinoris in the mid 1800s, it is now source to one of the most historically significant wines in Chiant Classico.

Tenuta Tignanello was already a large estate with ancient buildings and extensive vineyards in 1892 when it was detailed as one of the highest and most picturesque points in Chianti Classico. The property was once owned by a branch of the Medici and it remains one of the most historically significant super Tuscan blends of Cabernet and Sangiovese.

One of the oldest winemaking firms in the world, Antinori first commenced producing wines in and around Tuscany and around Florence in 1385. The estate Abbey was once home to the founder of the Vallombrosano order and is still owned by the monks, although Antinori make shrewd use of the beautiful cellars. The ancient Quelltaler property has endured a multitude of trials and tribulations throughout a century and a half of viticulture. Since the relaunch of Quelltaler as Annie's Lane, there has been nothing but universal praise for what is now considered to be one of Australia's finest and consistently satisfying range of table wines. A little over half of the grapes are sourced from the historic Quelltaler vineyards at Watervale, the balance being from a fraternity of Clare Valleys growers who have been supplying the historic wineworks for generations.

As far back as the earliest days of Clare Valley viticulture, the locals would help each other during the busy times of season. While she was delivering lunches to workers who were pruning vines one winter, Annie Wayman's horse drawn cart struck difficulty in negotiating the muddy track back to her cottage. From that day on, the track has been affectionately known as Annie's Lane. Quelltaler Watervale is harvested from vineyards bordering the famous Annie's Lane, crafted to a fine balance between the richness of Shiraz and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon.
