The Keltern vineyard provided the majority of the fruit for this wine. Keltern is located east of the Maraekakaho region and is a warm inland site buffered by the Ngaruroro River. The 2005 Hawkes Bay vintage was characterised by some extreme weather conditions. Warm temperatures and significant rainfalls were followed by a long, dry autumn and harvest.

Villa Maria selects clones of Pinot Gris that produce lower yields with smaller bunches, which translates into more concentrated flavours.
