Planted on own rootstock and located in the Padthaway Valley which is endowed with rich Terra rosa soils, the Morambro Creek property enjoys excellent sun exposure to achieve grapes of optimal flavours, colour and tannin. Vintages can be dry with little or no rain during fruit set and growing season. Berries are quite small and yields are minimal, flavours are concentrated and the quality superb.

In 1964 Jim Barry purchased seventy acres of prime river flats from Duncan McRae Wood in the Armagh area of Clare Valley and planted his first vineyard with Shiraz. It was an inspired choice of variety and location. The site would go on to become the foundation of Jim Barry's red wine production, and to grow the superlative grapes which are earmarked for the world renowned The Armagh. McCrae Wood is a big, full bodied wine with extravagant palate in true Jim Barry fashion, exhibiting deep tannins, lovely textures and ripe, concentrated flavours.

When Jim Barry first purchased the Lodge Hill property, his intention was to devote the entire area to white grapes. While Jim was conducting a soil analysis, he recognised his good fortune, discovering a very different soil profile on a small north-facing slope. His foresight lead to great triumph just before his passing, when Lodge Hill was awarded Best International Shiraz at the prestigious International Wine Challenge in London.

The fruit for this wine was harvested from mature low-yielding vines on the Jamiesons Run most northerly Coonawarra vineyards, and grower vineyards east of Penola. A warm and sunny vintage ensured the fruit developed ripe berry flavours, moderate acid and fine, ripe tannins, the vines produced small compact bunches of small berries with excellent colour and regional varietal flavours.
